Project Description:
Southwest Albuquerque development has been rapid and uncoordinated, resulting in an area that confounds the daily lives of its residents with inefficiency and added cost.
The primary goal of the Southwest Albuquerque Strategic Action Plan is to assist Southwest Albuquerque in becoming a complete community. The Plan proposes policies, regulations, and projects to support the building blocks for community transformation: (1) a convenient transportation network for walking, bicycling, driving and taking public transportation; (2) a network of community and neighborhood service areas; (3) a recognizable identity based on local natural and man-made elements; and (4) neighborhoods that each include housing for a variety of households, public services, recreational areas, and shopping all conveniently located and designed for walking, bicycling, and vehicle access.
Status as of May 2009:
On March 2, 2009 the City Council voted unanimously to adopt the Southwest Albuquerque Strategic Action Plan with amendments recommended by the EPC.
The adoption of the plan includes amendments to the West Side Strategic Plan and the Rio Bravo, Tower/Unser and West Route 66 Sector Development Plans.
Amendments to the West Side Strategic Plan include 1) a list of recommended capital projects and 2) new and amended policies to support the creation of a network of activity centers and complete neighborhoods.
Amendments to the three SW Albuquerque sector development plans include 1) the introduction of two zoning districts that may be applied to Activity Centers and 2) subdivision design regulations to support better pedestrian, bicycle, bus, and personal vehicle transportation.
The attached draft plan will be amended to reflect EPC recommendations adopted by City Council, but is fairly close to the final version and will work for reference. It will take several months to amend and reprint the four plans mentioned above. Please call Paula Donahue if you have questions.
