SUNDAY HIKES - From varied areas of Open Space
On Sundays, starting at 9:00 a.m., unless stated otherwise, knowledgeable guides and members of our community lead explorations and offer demonstrations in an assortment of fields and specialties. Please call Bill Pentler at 452-5222 for Pre-registration if stated. Our wish is to nudge you and your family to expand your views and begin a lifelong ritual of returning to your newly discovered favorite Open Spaces.

July 27th Wild Herb Hike - Milne Open Space. A 2 to 3 hour moderately strenuous hike led by Dara Saville who will share her extensive background in Herbalism. Find her at Albuquerque Herbalism, http://albuquerqueherbalism.com Bring water and whatever you need for a comfortable hike. Pre-registration Required
August 3rd Introduction to GPS – Elena Gallegos Double Shelter. A 2 to 3 hour instruction led by Erik Zsemlye of the City Open Space Division. Bring your GPS, limited borrowing of extra GPS units. Pre-registration Required
August 10th Volcanoes and Geology - Meet at 8:30 am. Volcanoes at the Petroglyph National Monument. A 2 to 3 hour hike led by noted Volcanologists Larry Crumpler and Jayne Aubele of the NM Natural History Museum, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Pre-registration Required
August 17th The ABC’s of Simple Bike Repair –The Open Space Visitor Center. A 1 to 2 hour session led by Chuck Malagodi of the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department’s Bicycle Safety Education Program and the Esperanza Community Bike Shop. Bring your bike for assessment and helmet for a possible ride afterward.
August 24th A Day of Mindfulness and Nature – Meet at 8:30 am. Carolino Canyon. A morning of tranquility and meditation led by Dug Corpolongo of Albuquerque Buddhist Fellowship lasting a few hours or longer. DIRECTIONS TO EVENTS:
Carolino Canyon - Exit I-40 at the Tijeras exit and continue south 9 miles on 337 which most know as South Highway 14. Carolino Canyon will come up on your left. The rough address is 10900 Park Access Road, Tijeras but look for the sign designating Carolino.
Elena Gallegos Park - The Elena Gallegos Park is located at the end of Simms Park Road, east of Tramway Boulevard, just north of Academy.
Main Loop – Turn right at the Entry Booth and follow the road. It loops past many trailheads and parking areas finally returning to the Entry Booth.
Pino Trailhead – Follow the road to the right of the entry booth and at the top of the loop, near a restroom, is the Pino Trailhead. It’s marked by a small sign.
Double Shelter Amphitheater – Turn right at the entry booth and follow the road two-thirds of the way around the Main Loop. The Double Shelter parking area will come up on your left just after you begin to head back toward the entry booth.
Kiwanis Shelter – Turn left or go around the entry booth and follow the road going north. Continue down the road through the dips and curves and the Kiwanis Shelter will come up on your right. Enter through the first gate and park.
Los Poblanos Fields – Drive west on Montaño from I-25 or Fourth Street and turn north on Tierra Viva Road. The parking area is on the left.
Open Space Visitor Center – Located at 6500 Coors Blvd. between Montaño and Paseo Del Norte. Look for the brown signs saying “Open Space Visitor Center” and turn east on Bosque Meadows Road. Look for the sculpture of multiple metal bars painted blue.
The Volcanoes – Petroglyph National Monument – Drive west on I 40 to Atrisco Vista Road and turn north or right. Drive 4.8 miles, the access road to the parking area will come up on your right. If coming from the north, take Paseo Del Norte west until it ends and curves south. Drive a number of miles until you get to the parking area access road.
