Description

The Open Space Visitor Center (OSVC) invites the citizens of Albuquerque to help us welcome the Sandhill cranes back to their winter habitat along the Middle Rio Grande river valley with this annual family-friendly event. Twenty one acres of agricultural land are the backdrop of this unique facility that includes an art gallery, interpretive exhibits, and a wildlife preserve. This event features presentations, children's activities, viewing scopes, crafts, workshops, and more!

*Scheduled activities include:

  • 8:00am: Guided Nature Walk. Meet in the lobby.
  • 9:00am: Tai Chi with the Cranes with Sifu Dug Corpolongo
  • 9:45am: Walking with Poets featuring Scott Wiggerman
  • 10:00am: Bird Meet and Greet with Wildlife Rescue
  • 11:00am: Craneology 101 with Ariel Elliot of Valle de Oro
  • 10:00am-2:00pm: Open Space Alliance Gift Shop Pop-up Sale
  • Buy unique arts, crafts, guidebooks, and more at a fabulous discount!
  • 12:00pm: Soaring Tales: Storytelling with Cynthia Dobson and Lucinda deLorimier. Cynthia Dobson and Lucinda deLorimier of the Storytellers of New Mexico share delightful tales of winged creatures and the marvels of nature to celebrate the return of the Sandhill Cranes. Join them for some great stories and let your imagination soar!
  • 1:00pm: Maple Street Dance Space Presents: Ballet-Afrique Crane Dance Trio
  • 2:00pm: Birds of Open Space: A Photographic Journey with Naturalist Bill Pentler, the Open Space Division’s Natural Resources and Visitor Services Supervisor and Resident Photographer
  • 3:00pm: Soaring Tales: Storytelling with Cynthia Dobson and Lucinda deLorimier. Cynthia Dobson and Lucinda deLorimier of the Storytellers of New Mexico share delightful tales of winged creatures and the marvels of nature to celebrate the return of the Sandhill Cranes. Join them for some great stories and let your imagination soar!
  • ONGOING:
  • Wildlife observation on the patio with scopes. Get a close up view of cranes, look for hawks, kestrels, and other wildlife and talk to trained naturalists.
  • Artist P.K. William’s stunning exhibit “The Crane’s Oasis” in the main gallery
  • “A Book of Cranes” Exhibit. A Book of Cranes is a large, accordion style folding screen book that measures 24” x 32” x 5” with a 16’ open, extended length. The original art is a variety of silk paintings, watercolors, and woodcut prints.
