The Open Space Visitor Center (OSVC) invites the citizens of Albuquerque to help us welcome the Sandhill cranes back to their winter habitat along the Middle Rio Grande valley!

  • In the Open Space Gallery: “Far Off the Path – Watercolors and Words by Betsy James”
  • Book of Cranes Book Exhibit. Celebrate the annual migration of Sandhill Cranes to New Mexico’s Rio Grande Valley. This brilliant collaboration is a must-see for lovers of cranes and all those who appreciate unique artistic expression. A Book of Cranes is a large, accordion style folding screen book that measures 24” x 32” x 5” with a 16’ open, extended length. The original art is a variety of silk paintings, watercolors, and woodcut prints.
  • 8:00am: Guided Bird hike. Call 897-8831 to reserve your place! 
  • 9:00 AM:   Tai Chi with the Cranes with Sifu Dug Corpolongo
  • 10am: A “Chautauqua” presentation of Aldo Leopold with Naturalist Steve Morgan.
  • 11:00 AM: Storytelling with Matilde Machiavello and Liz Mangual (ALL AGES!) 
  • 12:00 PM: Bruce Dale the CNMAS Conservation Chair will talk about how to protect bird habitat
  • 1:00pm. Maple Street Dance Space Presents: Ballet-Afrique Crane Dance Trio with Romy Keegan, Lauren V. Coons, and Miles Firkins.  Wendy Brown, speaker.  Jefferson Voorhees on drums, and crane songs from the field east of the Visitor's Center recorded last year, and produced by Lauren V. Coons.
  • 2:30pm: Dan Collins, the essentials of Crane Ecology
  • 3:30pm: Cranelogoy 101. Ariel Elliott, Wildlife Biologist with Valle de Oro NWR will present a talk about everything you need to know about the Sandhill crane, their habitat and behavior, and what makes this seasonal visitor so unique. Perfect for experienced and novice birders alike.
  • 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Opening Reception for “New Mexico Wildlife and Wildscapes” the art of Julia Cairns and L. Wren Walraven.
