Mayor Berry, Parks and Recreation, YAFL players break ribbon at popular sports park
Who’s ready for some YAFL football? How about some kickball, ultimate Frisbee, or rugby? These activities are just a sample of recreation happening year round at USS Bullhead Park, and now, a year’s worth of improvements to this bustling venue have been completed.
USS Bullhead Park hosts nearly 13,000 YAFL football players each year, more than 17,000 soccer players, and countless other leagues and teams. The park is also enjoyed by walkers, runners, dog lovers, and the general public.
Last year, the Parks and Recreation Department began much needed improvements to the park; the 1.67 million dollar upgrade was made possible by the 2011 G.O. Bond Program. These new features include the addition of 2.5 acres with an additional sports field added, improvements to access in and out of the park, an additional 159 new lighted parking spaces, and new landscaping and benches for park users.
“This park is used by thousands of kids and adults for recreation each year, and these improvements will most certainly improve the experience at USS Bullhead,” said Mayor Berry. “We are so thrilled to officially cut the ribbon. Let the games begin!”
Barbara Baca, Parks and Recreation Department Director, added: “Our sports fields are our pride and joy. Serving our community with upgraded venues for healthy, active recreational activity is at the core of what we do.”
The upgraded USS Bullhead is open to the public; the new recreational field will remain closed through the late summer and fall to allow for the new turf to take hold. The Parks and Recreation Department encourages the community to visit Bullhead and to participate in activities in the park.
