Call for Haiku

2020 Call for Poetry

Accepting Nature Haiku Submissions, NOW through February 17, 2020!

Announcing an open call for submissions of nature haiku, haikulike poems, and short one- or two-line poems from New Mexico poets for the annual Poets’ Picnic at the Open Space Visitor Center on the west side of Albuquerque, Saturday, May 23, 2020, a free event, open to the public. The day will include poetry readings, workshops, music, food, books, and more in a beautiful location:

Open Space Visitor Center 6500 Coors Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120 (505) 897-8831 Community sponsors for the 2020 Poets’ Picnic are Escribiente Calligraphy Society, LIBROS Book Arts Guild, the Open Space Alliance, and the New Mexico State Poetry Society. Dale Harris and Scott Wiggerman are again coordinating the poetry for this unique celebration. Mark your calendars: POETS’ PICNIC, Saturday, May 23, 2020.

GUIDELINES: The theme of your poems should be related to nature: the seasons, Rio Grande Valley, open spaces, plants, animals, cranes, ecology, the Bosque, the environment. An ideal length is approximately 10 words (poems need to be able to fit on a Weathergram to hang from trees around the Open Space!). Editors are less concerned with syllable counts and form than with line breaks, subject, and substance. Please follow the guidelines.

Send four-six (4-6) of your best nature haiku and/or short one- or two-line unpublished, original poems in the body of an email (no attachments) to: Scott Wiggerman: [email protected] Use “2020 Poets’ Picnic Haiku” as the subject of your email, and send all poems in one email. Include your name, byline (if different from your name), email address, town/city, and phone number! Deadline for submissions: February 17, 2020.

Escribiente will again produce Weathergrams (see photo), and LIBROS book artists will again create a limited-edition poetry chapbook of the selected poems for sale at the Poets’ Picnic, May 23, as a fundraiser for the Open Space Alliance, a volunteer group that supports Open Space activities. A steeply discounted price will be available to poets chosen for the chapbook.

Remember, send only original poems that have not been previously published in print or online! Deadline for submissions: February 17, 2020
