The Los Altos Skate Park is receiving some polish this year! The project – 3 years in the making – is a cooperative effort between the Parks and Recreation Department and NMX Sports (NMX). Working together, NMX secured a grant from the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) and combined that funding with financial assistance from the Parks and Recreation Department. NMX and Parks and Recreation enlisted the help of local skateboarders and bike riders to help design and construct the new amenities, which include: new murals on the skate bowls, a brand new “beginners” skate bowl, new asphalt landscaping features, and various smaller maintenance projects. Involving local skaters and youth participants in the construction - under the supervision of Parks and Recreation Construction Crews – was designed to not only include users of the park in the renovation, but to engender valuable life-long construction skills and to open potential job opportunities for young community members with the City of Albuquerque. The project began in the Spring of 2013, and will finish up Winter of 2014.
