Balloon Fiesta Park 20th Anniversary
Albuquerque-Time has flown by! This year marks the 20th Anniversary of one of the most important partnerships of Albuquerque history: The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (AIBF) and The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department. In 1995, The Balloon Fiesta Park hosted Balloon Fiesta and initial development to the park began. Since then, the City has constructed improvements to the park to accommodate food and entertainment vendors. In 2011, the city rescued the former Garduño’s on the Green and turned it into the Balloon Fiesta Park Golf and Event Center.
20 years later, the Event Center is steadily booked for weddings, graduations and other celebrations into 2017! The park stays in full-use during the “off-season” of Balloon Fiesta. For 10-months out of the year, the park’s field is a reliable hub for many main events, with an average of 65 major attractions for thousands of visitors each year from rugby and soccer tournaments, bicycle races, and fundraiser 5k runs to the Celtic Festival, Bacon Festival and Freedom Fourth. The Golf Center continues to grow in patronage as the driving range and 6-hole pitch-and-putt brings in over 12,000 golfers annually.
This year, the City introduced the Sid Cutter Pilots’ Pavilion. The $2.3 million building is designed to be a multi-purpose building that will serve as headquarters for Balloon Pilots during the Fiesta and a venue for a multitude of events year-round. Event-booking for the Sid Cutter Pilot’s Pavilion has already begun.
The park is maintained and operated by the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department under the office of Mayor Richard J. Berry.
