On April 21, nearly 500 people attended the Fourth Annual Recycled Art Fair hosted by the Open Space Visitor Center. The Fair was a colorful celebration of resourcefulness featuring over 30 booths selling astonishingly creative and beautiful objects “upcycled” from discarded materials. Imagine sandals crafted from recycled yogurt containers, furniture made from reclaimed construction material, magazine pages formed into delicate jewelry, lawn art assembled from--well, you name it--clothing, sculpture, and so much more. Visitors also learned about composting and the City’s Public Art program, made stryofoam block prints and shadow boxes, and visited with the late environmental heroine, Rachel Carson. And if one missed the Fair, visitors enjoyed the juried Recycled Art Show on exhibit in the Visitor Center lobby through May 1st. The exhibit alone was worth a trip to the Center! We wish to congratulate the following artists for their placement in the art show:
1st Place: “Frankenseed” by Wes Brittenham
2nd Place: “Lotus Flowers” by Susan Tische
3rd Place: Two entrants tied: “April Bond” by Luke Logan and “Spotted Balls” by Mataji Graham
Honorable Mentions: “Figure” by Adrienne Aleixandre of the Bosque School and “Billy da Kid” by Gilbert Candelaria
The success of the Recycled Art Fair would not have been possible without the hard work and support of key people and groups.

The City of Albuquerque is celebrating its annual Spring Clean-ups with the Fourth Annual Recycled Art Fair. Please join us to see how this amazing art form is evolving and becoming a sustainable alternative for “shopping at the mall.” Recycled Art, also known as Upcycle Art, has been of immense diversity in our four years’ experience. There are artists who have used discarded materials for years and achieved wide acclaim but are not known for the source material, those who repurpose into creations that have no resemblance to the original material and those who make us clever, useful objects to make our daily life easier and prettier. This immense diversity led to our decision to divide the show into the Juried Art Exhibit and the Recycled Art Fair with sales booths.
What is the difference between upcycling, re-use, repurposing and recycling? And did you say ART? Join us April 21st and find out more at the Fourth Annual Recycled Art Fair at the Open Space Visitor Center. We will have 30+ Recycled Artists, free composting demos and workshops, educational booths, kids’ creativity centers, workshops on how to create your own recycled art, face painters, food and festivities as well as music. This year we celebrate the Open Space Spring Clean-ups throughout April with a prize for most interesting trash found. You have never had so much fun learning about sustainability!
The Open Space Visitor Center is located at 6500 Coors Blvd. NW between Montaño Rd. and Paseo del Norte at the end of Bosque Meadows Rd. The Center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and closed Mondays.
