A Sample of Bike Paths in Open Space lands

There are many exciting bicycle opportunities in Open Space lands.  Bike trails range from easy to difficult, and can be found in varying environments and altitudes.  A sample of the trails offered in Open Space Lands follows:

Easy

A less challenging and beautiful ride can be found in the Albuquerque Bosque.  The trail, called the Paseo del Bosque, is accessible from Alameda and Rio Bravo open spaces, and several points between the two areas.  There is parking accessibility at both facilities, and the ride is approximately 15 miles one way.  A map of access points and parking areas is available.

Moderate

A moderately difficult ride can be found at Petroglyph National Monument Volcanoes Park Leaving www.cabq.gov, click for disclaimer on Albuquerque’s west mesa.  The trail system begins at the parking area and offers several routes to visit the cinder cones. The Park is open from 9am-5pm, seven days a week. Entrance is free.

Difficult

There are challenging trails throughout the Sandia Foothills system, which runs north from the Copper trailhead to the Elena Gallegos Picnic Area.  A particularly challenging trail is 230.  The trail proves to be quite difficult because of steep mountain inclines and challenging desert environments, such as arroyos and large boulder groupings. This trail is accessible through Elena Gallegos Picnic Area, and is best reached by taking trail 230a north.  Elena Gallegos Open Space is open from 7am-9pm April-October, 7am-7pm November-March, and there is a $1.00 weekday and $2.00 weekend parking fee.
