Much of what defines Albuquerque and makes it unique are its “open” and undeveloped spaces such as the cottonwood Bosque of the Rio Grande Valley, the Sandia Foothills, and the volcanic escarpment and grasslands of the City’s West Side.  Most people living in Albuquerque are aware that the Open Space program exists to preserve culturally and environmentally important areas in and around the City, but many people do not know everything we do.  For example, the Division also manages farms, wetlands, archeological sites, and hundreds of acres of Major Public Open Space in Sandoval County and in the Manzanos and Sandia Mountains.
