The Albuquerque Museum welcomes and appreciates the volunteer services of museum docents. To join the docent program, it is not necessary to have an academic background in art or history. Training is done by the Curatorial Staff and guest lecturers. Docents are expected to return at least two years of service for every year of training. Please call the Museum Education Division at 243-7255 for further information.

There are four docent programs at The Albuquerque Museum.

Gallery Tours Program

Docents provide guided one-hour tours for children and adults. The permanent art or history collections, special exhibitions, focus tours, or specially awarded two-hour "Magic Bus" tours are offered. Docents are trained in a two-year program which covers New Mexico art in one year (September through mid May) and New Mexico history in the alternate year. Training sessions are scheduled on Mondays.

Old Town Walking Tours Program

Docents offer a daily 11 a.m. tour from mid-March through mid-December and specially requested tours of historic Old Town throughout most of the year. A six-week training program is open to anyone who is interested in Albuquerque history and likes to interact with the general public.

Sculpture Garden Tours Program

Docents offer guided walks through the Sculpture Garden at 10 a.m., Tuesdays through Fridays from mid-April to November. Training sessions are held once a week on a selected weekday at 10 a.m. Docents must have completed the gallery tours training program or have an extensive art/sculpture background to join this program.

Casa San Ysidro Program

Docents lead one-hour guided tours of the historic Casa San Ysidro, the Museum's satellite historic house in Corrales. Docents must have completed a year of history training at The Albuquerque Museum in order to be eligible for this program.
