The purpose of the Society of Layerist is to serve as a network for artists who express a holistic perspective, in which everything relates to everything else, across time and space.  Layered art can be done in any medium, but it shares a unifying intention. One of the goals of SLMM is to present this art form to the public.

Characteristically, Layerists make references to many overlapping interests and experiences in a single work.  They draw upon their awareness of archaeology, geology, astronomy, anthropology, biology, psychology, and ecology, not as scientists themselves but as artists whose imagination is involved with a range of thought, including metaphysics, literature, philosophy and the history of art.  The deepest source of Layered art is the inner landscape of the artists, where a myriad of images and memories coalesce into a related whole.  Often, Layerists imbue their work with a sense of otherness which gives Layered art a spiritual quality.  Many Layerists have had an  “Aha!” moment in which they recognize the hidden connections in everything that is, was or will be.
