Albuquerque Firefighters Eddie Gutierrez and Mike Martinez stated they were "just doing their job" one rainy Saturday evening when a 15 year old by the name of James Ridgeway found himself helpless against the raging flood waters in a city diversion channel.
Mayor Chavez stated that the City has been doing specialized training since the late 80's and there has not been a drowning since the start of this specialized training. Chavez also stated that the two firefighters, Gutierrez and Martinez, are both heroes. Without their heroic acts, Ridgeway would not be standing here today.
Jean Ridgeway, James' mother, was very thankful for the quick action taken by AFD. Chief Ortega reiterated the Fire Department's unofficial motto: "Saving lives and reuniting mothers with their children is just another day at the office."
Mayor Chavez salutes the men and women of the AFD.
