Volunteer Goes Above and Beyond for the Ronald McDonald House of Charities

Volunteer of the Month: LaVina Faulk

February 3, 2017

Albuquerque, NM – Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized LaVina Faulk as the City of Albuquerque’s Volunteer of the Month for going above and beyond while volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico.

Since 1974, the Ronald McDonald House of Charities (RMHC) has worked to create, find, and support programs that improve the health and well-being of children. The non-profit has a global network with chapters in 63 countries and regions and helps families deal with the financial issues that come with having a sick child. Many families have children that require medical care in a city that is not close to their home, RMHC helps address those problems. The Ronald McDonald Family Room, a program within RMHC, offers families a place to rest, shower, sleep, do laundry and more right at the hospital where their child is receiving treatment. This program helps keep families close to their child and the medical team in charge of their child’s care at all times.

Faulk and her family visited the Family Room and took advantage of the services that were offered while her grandson was receiving treatment. Because of the time that she spent there, Faulk knows firsthand how important the Ronald McDonald Family Room is to the families whose children are receiving medical treatment. Faulk felt so moved by the program that she decided she wanted to give back to the other families in need by becoming a volunteer.

For more than a year now, Faulk has been a valuable volunteer at the University of New Mexico Hospital Family Room. Families and fellow volunteers know they can count on Faulk to be there for them with a smile and a kind word. She is always happy to go above and beyond the call of duty, often picking up extra shifts. During the holiday season, Faulk helped to cover three shifts a week while other volunteers were on holiday vacations.

Faulk loves volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Family Room because the families she meets are always grateful and it is helping to heal her heart. One of her favorite things is interacting with the families and learning about their own unique stories. It is for these reasons that LaVina Faulk was recognized as the City of Albuquerque’s Volunteer of the Month for the month of February 2017.
