Security Officer Prevents Wildfire
April 29, 2016
Albuquerque- Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry awarded Sgt. Santos Quintana, a security officer for the Department of Municipal Development (DMD), for his quick action that ultimately saved the Bosque from a wildfire.
On the evening of February 21st, Sgt. Quintana was on patrol when he observed a glow in the Bosque directly behind Tingley Beach. When he drew closer to the glow to investigate, he realized that what the source was the beginning of a fire deep in the brush near the river.
Sgt. Quintana immediately contacted the Albuquerque Fire Department (AFD) Dispatch Center and reported the flames. After requesting assistance from his co-workers, Sgt. Quintana began to secure the area by keeping bystanders away and safe while waiting for AFD to arrive. Along with his crew, Quintana maintained a perimeter, rerouted traffic on the trails and kept Tingley Drive open only to emergency vehicles.
Upon AFD’s arrival on scene the firefighters quickly got not just one but two fires under control. AFD and DMD crews worked together and established a fire watch in the Bosque well into the night after emergency crews departed.
Sgt. Santos Quintana’s quick actions prevented what could have been a much different and devastating outcome. By investigating a small glow deep in the brush, he stopped what could have grown into a wildfire that would have threatened people, homes, and wildlife. His instinct and dedication to providing a safe-guard to the community is what earned him the title of Employee of the Week.
