Rio Grande Trail Bridge Announced
Mayor Chávez announced last week that the design is complete on the multi-use trail crossing the Rio Grande.
Mayor Marty Chávez announced that the design for the long awaited multi-use trail crossing at the Rio Grande next to I-40 is complete. This project has been a priority of the Mayor’s for more than a decade, and it is moving forward, with the help of stimulus funding. This is one of the first projects in the city to be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The bridge will provide a safe travel grid for bicyclists to get downtown from the Westside without using an arterial crossing like Central, I-40 or Montano. The lit trail will be 10 feet wide, and link to the Bosque Trail on the east side of the Rio Grande and to Ouray on the west side of the river.
The design of the bridge includes:
- Metal arches for a Route 66 feel
- Asphalt surface for a smoother ride
- Lighting on the bridge
- Art elements
- Two overlook platforms
The City will advertise for bids in the next few weeks, and soon after construction will begin. Expect the project to be complete in the spring of 2010.
