Parks and Recreation Employee Helps Victim of E-Cigarette Explosion
May 20, 2016
Albuquerque- Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry awarded Geno Luciani, a Park Maintenance employee that has been with the Department of Parks and Recreation for 10 years, for his quick action to help a man with second and third degree burns on the side of the road.
On the afternoon of January 6th, Luciani was driving down Rio Grande Boulevard when he saw an empty car in the street. He then saw a man sitting at a nearby bus stop holding his leg and yelling for help. Luciani pulled over and rushed to see how he could assist the man.
As soon as he approached the man, Luciani realized he was severely burned on his hand and his leg. The man explained that he was driving when the e-cigarette exploded inside of his pocket, scorching his car seat, leg, hand, and clothes.
Taking note of their location, Luciani realized they were close to Albuquerque Fire Department (AFD) Station 10, and decided to drive there to get immediate on-site assistance. Luciani stayed with the victim until he received medical help.
While many cars drove by this victim calling out for help, Geno Luciani’s compassion and quick action helped a severely burned man get medical attention and aide that he so desperately needed. It is for these reasons that Geno Luciani has been selected as the recipient of this week’s Employee of the Week award.
