Albuquerque is facing colder weather and hard economic times. Many of our friends and neighbors are having trouble getting by, but Mayor Martin Chávez and the City of Albuquerque want to help.
On Oct. 7, Mayor Chávez announced a program with the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help those in need. City Fire Stations will work as collection points for non-perishable items. Donations will be delivered to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, whose work helps countless numbers of families.
In addition, Mayor Chávez is helping start a new initiative to help low-income pet owners keep their pets.
The Mayor's office, The Storehouse, the Petco Foundation and the City's Animal Welfare Department are partnering to assist pet owners in need.
The Petco Foundation has generously donated two tons of pet food for qualified clients of The Storehouse.
Additional pet food donations also can be dropped off at city Fire Stations.
"This couldn't have come at a better time, given the national economic downturn," Mayor Chávez said. "Today, I ask the community to please donate non-perishable goods and consider buying an additional bag of dog food or cat food that will go to a needy family or senior citizen."
