Music Store Teacher Thwarts Offender Selling Stolen Instruments

Good Samaritan: Kelly Barnard

February 3, 2017

Albuquerque- Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry awarded Kelly Barnard as this week’s Good Samaritan for helping the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) recover $20,000 in stolen merchandise.

Barnard is a guitar teacher and sales associate at the Guitar Center in Albuquerque. The Guitar Center is a music store that sells new and used musical instruments, repairs and buys used musical instruments, and offers group workshops to aspiring and seasoned musicians interested in acquiring new skills and techniques.

In October 2016, a man arrived at Guitar Center looking to sell a Santa Cruz acoustic guitar, a Gibson mandolin, and a Deering banjo. Barnard asked the man where he bought the three instruments. When the man indicated which store, Barnard knew that particular store does not sell that type of high end instruments. Then, Barnard called the only store that does sell that caliber of instrument. Because Barnard’s intuition led him to believe the instruments were not actually the man’s to sell, he asked the store owner if someone had reported a missing guitar. The store owner confirmed with Barnard that someone had reported a missing guitar. Barnard discretely called APD to report he had a man in his store attempting to sell stolen guitars. Barnard remained friendly and calm, and engaged the man in order to stall him, making the apprehension by APD officers seamless.

APD officers explained to Barnard that the guitars along with a large amount of jewelry were stolen from a physician’s residence in Santa Fe. Officers explained to Barnard that the physician was ecstatic to learn his property would be returned, in large part because of Barnard’s brave actions.

Barnard has been teaching guitar to people ages 6 to 90 for several years. He also teaches group classes for the Guitar Center. Aside from his work at the music store, Barnard teaches private guitar lessons.

Barnard’s expertise in the market of guitars and his bold actions to stall the offender helped APD, as well as the victim whose merchandise was stolen. It is for these reasons that Kelly Barnard was recognized as this week’s City of Albuquerque’s Good Samaritan.
