Moving Company Employee Runs to the Aid of a Neighbor to Extinguish Fire

Good Samaritan: Samuel Silsby

October 24, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE, NM –Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized Samuel Silsby, an employee at a local moving company, as a Good Samaritan for his quick actions to extinguish a fire behind a home and prevent extensive fire damage.

This summer, Silsby, who has been a mover/driver with Two Men and a Truck® for nearly a year now, was finishing up a moving job at a home in Northwest Albuquerque when he heard the frantic screams of his client’s neighbor. The neighbor ran over and informed both Silsby and his client about a fire that had started behind his home. While the neighbor called 9-1-1, Silsby jumped into action and grabbed the fire extinguisher from the moving truck. He ran over to the blaze and immediately used the extinguisher to try to put out the flames. Unfortunately, the small fire extinguisher was not powerful enough to put out the blaze, so Silsby thought on his feet to grab a shovel from the neighbor and began to pile dirt on the flames.

After numerous piles of dirt, Silsby was finally able to tame the flames just as the Albuquerque Fire Department arrived on scene. Had Silsby not jumped in to assist, firefighters could have arrived to a home fully engulfed in flames. Instead, because of Silsby’s heroic actions, firefighters were able to arrive to a contained scene with no lives lost and little property damage. For his selfless actions and bravery, the Mayor has honored Sam Silsby as next week’s Good Samaritan.
