On Friday, April 13, 2012, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized the wife of an Albuquerque Firefighter for her role in potentially saving the lives of dozens of children on a school bus. The Good Samaritan is Rhonda Carlsen.
Earlier this year Mrs. Carlsen was waiting at an APS bus stop with her children when the bus rolled passed the designated stop. She felt like something may be wrong and ran to the front of the rolling bus to see that the bus driver was unconscious.
She realized that it was impossible to open the bus from the outside and continued to run alongside, while showing one of the third-graders how to open the door. She also pushed on the middle of the door trying to get it to buckle.
The student was able to understand what she was explaining and opened up the door the door to the worried mother. Mrs. Carlsen jumped onboard the moving bus and hit the brake, escorting all the young passengers to safety.
She turned off the bus and began to try to calm down the frightened students. It was the quick thinking of this concerned mother that saved the lives of many young students on a run-away bus.
