ALBUQUERQUE - On Friday, June 8, 2012, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized four current members of the Albuquerque Fire Department, and two members of the Firefighters Random Acts group.
Firefighters Random Acts is a charity created by dedicated firefighters from the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Fire Departments. Their purpose is to perform random acts of kindness in the Albuquerque area. These acts have ranged from donating furniture to a cancer survivor, to cleaning up 130,000 pounds of trash in a single day.
Two members with this group are retired AFD Firefighter Mike McKinstry and Bernalillo Firefighter Steve Vaughan. These two gentlemen are crucial to the way that group orchestrates. They reached out to Lieutenant Greg Aragon, Driver John Luna, Firefighter David Zamora and Firefighter Chris Chavez on May 14, 2012 to have them honor a young boy that had been diagnosed with Leukemia.
Along with Chief Breen these local heroes went to the home of the boy and named him an honorary Albuquerque Firefighter. These men helped a young boy realize his dream of becoming a firefighter and this is something that will not only stay with the boy, but with his entire family.
It is crucial that firefighters and public servants not only do their jobs but go above and beyond for the community that they humbly serve.
