Mayor Recognizes ABQ Veterans

Veteran Walls created at Senior Centers to commemorate service.

May 8, 2017:

Albuquerque, NM – Under the direction of Mayor Richard J. Berry, the Department of Senior Affairs has created "Veteran Walls" at each of the six senior centers and two multigenerational centers in Albuquerque. The purpose of these walls is to honor those veterans in the community for their heroism and to thank them on behalf of the City for their sacrifice.

On July 1, 2014, the Barelas Senior Center was the first to unveil a Veteran Wall in the social hall and the final wall was unveiled at the Palo Duro Senior Center on November 3, 2016. A total of 184 pictures proudly display the stories of senior veterans in our community; 170 (92 percent) are males and 14 (8 percent) are females.

Mayor Richard J. Berry said, "These veterans have stepped forward to protect and defend our country, state, and city, often putting their lives on the line for our freedom. The City of Albuquerque is proud to honor our veterans for their sacrifices. It is a great accomplishment that each center has honored its Veteran members. The City of Albuquerque is currently in the process of updating these walls with even more veterans who want to share their story."

Each center will host another ceremony to update the wall at the facility. The schedule is:

  • May 18, 2017: North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center
  • May 25, 2017: Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center
  • June 15, 2017: Los Volcanes Senior Center
