Albuquerque- Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry and First Lady Maria Berry visited PB&J’s Fathers Building Futures to present the local nonprofit with their share of the proceeds from the 2015 Mayor & First Lady’s Charity Gala. The 2015 Gala raised a total of $239,942 for Accion New Mexico, PB&J’s Fathers Building Futures, Albuquerque Community Foundation: The Bright Futures Fund, and Homework Diner: ABC Community School Partnership.
Of that total, Fathers Building Futures received $30,000, which will support one father through their program.
Mayor and the First Lady’s support from the 2015 Charity Gala will allow Fathers Building Futures to continue the job-skills training program after current grant money expires. Mayor Berry and his wife were the first to join the "Sponsor-A-Dad" fundraising initiative. This initiative will allow Fathers Building Futures to keep one father employed for a full year in order to support his family and contribute positively to the community.
Fathers Building Futures is actively looking for more organizations and individuals to follow the Mayor and First Lady’s footsteps in joining the "Sponsor-A-Dad" program.
Mayor: 'This Program is Truly Inspirational'
The success of the Gala is evidenced by the fact that proceeds raised were able to meet the financial requests of each nonprofit beneficiary of the event, for the sixth year in a row. Over the six years that the First Lady and Mayor have been hosting the gala, they’ve raised more than $1.1 million net for local nonprofits, helping tens of thousands of people in need.
"I am humbled to work with our generous community who continues to support such worth causes like Fathers Building Futures,’ said First Lady Maria Berry. "This program is truly inspirational, and I am so pleased that the money raised at this year’s gala could help impact someone’s life so profoundly."
Mayor Berry reiterated his appreciation to supporters of the event.
"I am proud to be the Mayor of a city that gives so selflessly," he said. "It’s an amazing testament to Albuquerque and the dozens of non-profit recipients who have used the funds to provide much needed services to thousands of individuals right here at home."
About Fathers Building Futures
Established over three years ago, Fathers Building Futures is a nationally recognized economic development initiative for formerly incarcerated fathers who are committed to financial stability for their families through developing their personal and professional potential.
Through their auto-detailing, mobile power-washing, woodworking and delivery enterprises, our fathers are providing affordable, meaningful and expert services to the community in order to break the cycle of incarceration, violence, drug use, child abuse and neglect.
This project was by the courageous men who have, and who will continue to, overcome obstacles in order to succeed as providers for their children and community.
