ALBUQUERQUE NM - Mayor Richard J. Berry today announced the installation of a new 'silver screen' at the KiMo Theatre. The screen is one of several additions or changes to the KiMo Theatre during the past several months that have greatly enhanced the experience of attending an event at the KiMo.

The screen was manufactured by Stewart Film screen and does contain real silver particles. The screen, which is about 33 feet wide and 14 feet high, will provide KiMo patrons with a cinema-quality movie experience. With the silver screen, the KiMo will have the ability to showcase 3-D movies as well as archival 35 millimeter films. It also will increase the contrast and brightness of movies.

"When the KiMo opened in 1927, it opened with a 'silver screen,'" said Mayor Berry. "It is great to be able to bring this feature back to this historic theater and it is just one of the ways that the City is restoring this wonderful building and improving the quality of the experience of coming to the KiMo."

In addition to the screen, the KiMo has received a new coat of exterior paint. The murals in the entry way have been refurbished and a new HVAC system was installed. A new neon sign was installed in front of the theater this past June. A new sound board and state-of-the art HD projector have also been added.

The first use of the screen will be for a live broadcast of the Academy Award-nominated live and animated short films on Saturday, February, 25. On Sunday, February 26, the screen will be used to feature the 84th Annual Academy Awards during the Oscar Night® America party. The KiMo is one of 49 locations in the United States to host an official Oscar Night America celebration. Tickets to this special black-tie event are $25 per person and benefit the KiMo and the Friends for the Public Library.

"Showcasing the Oscars and being the only official location in New Mexico to do so is a KiMo first," said Mayor Berry. "I know it will be exciting and I look forward to seeing many citizens come out to enjoy the Oscar celebration in their Oscar-best."

The Red Carpet broadcast begins at 5:30 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to predict the winners of the night's Oscar event in the Nomination Ballot Contest. The person with the most correct predictions will win the grand prize of a tour for two of the set of "Breaking Bad" with City of Albuquerque Film Office director Ann Lerner.

Tickets are available at KiMoTickets.com or 505-886-1251, and are also available in person at the KiMo Box Office, 505-768-3544. Hours: Wednesday - Saturday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Ticket sales on day-of-event, if available.
