Albuquerque, NM - Mayor Richard J. Berry accepted the NGBS Green Partner of Excellence Award from Home Innovation Research Labs for creating a favorable business and consumer climate that has transformed local residential construction and encouraged the expansion of high performing "green" homes in Albuquerque. Based near Washington, D.C., and established in 1964, Home Innovation Labs is a nationally accredited third-party certification and testing agency focused on the residential construction industry.
Albuquerque is considered the strongest major metropolitan city in the nation for green building under Home Innovation’s NGBS Green Certification Program, based on the ANSI-approved National Green Building Standard (NGBS). Albuquerque has the highest number of Gold-certified homes in the program. To date, there have been 225 single-family homes in the City certified by Home Innovation and there are dozens more in the pipeline. Ninety-eight percent of New Mexico’s NGBS Green Certified homes are located within Albuquerque.
"I am honored on behalf of the city to receive this recognition. It shows we can make strategic decisions for the growth and development of our local economy, while still doing the right thing," said Mayor Richard J. Berry.
Home Innovation Research Labs recognizes NGBS Green Partners annually for outstanding contributions to advancing green building in their communities and their commitment to voluntary, market-driven, third-party certification of high-performance homes.
"We run a national certification program to the most rigorous green building criteria available in the residential industry," said Home Innovation Labs president and CEO Michael Luzier. "And we recognize it takes a lot for a company, an individual, or a municipality to persevere with such rigors. That’s why this year we were compelled to recognize the significant commitment to innovation and leadership in the residential construction industry that some of our NGBS Green Partners across the country have displayed, perhaps nowhere more significantly than here in Albuquerque. We are truly impressed and inspired by the atmosphere of positive change the Mayor has created here, and by what builders like Paul Allen Homes are achieving in the field of third-party certified green home building. It is incredible to see the market transformation they are helping to accomplish."
"We are delighted that the City of Albuquerque and Mayor Berry have been selected to receive the NGBS Green Partner of Excellence Award. This recognition and award are particularly meaningful to our builders since it represents just how successful collaborations can be between the public and private sectors. The City’s and Mayor’s incentive-based support of our Build Green New Mexico program could be used as a model across the country of how to bring green building concepts into the marketplace cost-effectively and changing an entire industry in the process," said Jim Folkman, Executive Vice President of Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico.
"Mayor Berry directed the Department of Planning early on to focus on the Green Path building program," said Suzanne Lubar, Acting Director. "As a result, we have seen our permits for green build homes sky rocket from 201 permits in FY11’s to 201 to 717 permits in FY13 to 717, that’s over a 250% increase!" added Lubar.
As a result the city has given Albuquerque residents options when choosing homes with increased comfort, improved health and increased durability and efficiency, like those certified nationally by Home Innovation Research Labs to the NGBS.
Mayor Berry is proud to be a co-recipient of this award with Paul Allen Homes, a respected local residential construction company that has the highest per-capita number of Gold-level Home Innovation NGBS Green Certifications in the nation.
