Albuquerque – Lucky Paws will soon be featured in a colorful book called “Mall Dogs” by author Jessi Badami. Today Mayor Richard Berry, Barbara Bruin, Director of Animal Welfare Department and the Lucky Paws staff are celebrating the Lucky Paws adoption center for the accomplishments that have earned them a place in the book.
"We are honored that Lucky Paws has been recognized in the book Mall Dogs. The adoption center is an outlet of hope that has saved the lives of thousands of animals," said Mayor Richard Berry.
"Lucky Paws often finds homes for hard-to-adopt dogs and cats, such as older animals and disabled animals that would have perished in the past. The visibility and wonderful staff at Lucky Paws work their magic to get pets into forever homes," said Barbara Bruin, Director of the Animal Welfare Department.
Author Jessi Badami states, "this was the first time I had ever seen a city shelter so forward-thinking about doing things better. I know this was nothing short of revolutionary and that this was a story that needed to be told."
It’s all part of a larger success story at the Animal Welfare Department. Last year at the City shelters, euthanasia decreased 40 percent while spay and neuter of animals has increased 45 percent in the past two years.
