Albuquerque- Today several employees from the Aquatics Division were honored for their preparedness and response to an emergency situation. A woman at Los Altos Pool came to the lifeguard staff and said she felt an epileptic seizure coming on. Ben March, Caitlin Sweeney, Ben Swari, and Amanda Loera quickly mobilized to start providing care to the woman. They called 911, the swimmer’s seizure began and she started to show signs of respiratory arrest.
Using their training, the lifeguards gave her oxygen and emergency ventilation through a bag valve mask. The seizure lasted an excruciating 10 minutes, but throughout the duration the lifeguards were able to effectively protect the patient while providing the critical oxygen filled ventilator.
Emergency Responders transported the seizure patient to the hospital, where she made a full recovery.
The team’s strong commitment to training, teamwork, planning and emergency preparedness stems from their Aquatic Managers- Shawn Maden and Brandon Eagan.
