Former Prosecutor Tapped to be the Next Independent Review Officer

Albuquerque- Today the Berry Administration announced that Ms. Robin Hammer has been nominated to be the next Independent Review Officer [IRO]. If approved by the City Council Ms. Hammer would formally start this August (2012). The former prosecutor was one of three people nominated by the Police Oversight Commission, the advisory board that receives and makes recommendations regarding complaints against the Albuquerque Police Department. Ms. Hammer scored the highest of all candidates during the evaluation process. The Mayor approved her nomination as the IRO, as required by the POC Ordinance.
"This is a very important position within city government. We are always striving to improve the police oversight process and I am confident that Ms. Hammer’s skills and expertise will add greatly to the equation." said Mayor Richard J. Berry.
Ms. Hammer comes to her position with a great deal of legal and investigative experience. Her resume includes working as the Senior Investigative Trial Counsel for the Judicial Standards Commission, where she investigated complaints against New Mexico judges. She has also served as the Deputy District Attorney for Bernalillo, Santa Fe, and Farmington areas.
Ms. Hammer’s nomination is slated to be introduced to the City Council on August 6, 2012.
