First Responders Assist Man Who Saved Friend’s Life

Good Samaritan: Patrick Allen; and Friday’s Heroes: Albuquerque Fire Department Unit 78, Engine 3, and Rescue 13, and Albuquerque Ambulance Service

Albuquerque, NM- Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized a team of first responders and a quick-acting Good Samaritan for swiftly responding to a man in cardiac arrest. This week’s Good Samaritan is Patrick Allen and this week’s Friday’s Heroes are Albuquerque Fire Department (AFD) Unit 78 Paramedic Captain Santos Garcia, Engine 3 Lieutenant Lawrence Woods, Firefighter Ryan Cheshire, Firefighter Michael Lucero, Firefighter Matthew Trujillo, Rescue 13 Lieutenant Jason Chavez and Driver Matthew Chinchilla, and Albuquerque Ambulance Service (AAS) EMT Allen Scott and Paramedic Thomas Rogers.

In March 2017, friends Allen and Chandler were finishing up trimming a tree when, suddenly, Chandler grabbed his chest, collapsed to the floor, went unconscious and stopped breathing. Allen quickly reacted by first checking Chandler for a pulse. When he couldn’t find one, he immediately began performing CPR. Moments later, the homeowner whose tree Allen and Chandler were trimming realized Chandler’s emergency and called 9-1-1. Allen performed CPR on his friend for approximately 5 minutes. Then, AFD Engine 3 crew arrived on the scene, took over CPR and provided basic life support on Chandler who did not yet have a pulse nor was he breathing. Soon after, Rescue 13 Paramedics arrived and Unit 78 Paramedic Captain Garcia, along with AAS EMT Scott and Paramedic Rogers, intervened and an automatic external defibrillator (AED) was applied to Chandler. After the AFD and AAS crews performed CPR for 10 to 15 minutes, Chandler started breathing and regained a pulse.

While Chandler was in route to the hospital, the crews used Engine 3’s Lifepak 15 monitor to transmit an EKG and serial EKG’s to the hospital’s emergency department staff and diagnosed him with an acute myocardial infarction, or heart attack. Once AAS and Chandler arrived at the hospital, he was immediately taken to the cath lab where he was found to have an occlusion of his left main and left circumflex arteries, and a lifesaving stent was placed. Several weeks after Chandler’s life-threatening experience, Paramedic Captain Garcia stopped to visit with Chandler to see how he was doing. At the time, Chandler explained that he had experienced slight memory loss but was recovering.

Because of Allen’s strong desire to help others, and because of his swift, heroic actions by performing CPR on his friend, Chandler is alive and well. If Allen had not performed CPR and the first responders had not quickly intervened, Chandler’s circumstances would be quite different. It is for these reasons that Patrick Allen was recognized as this week’s City of Albuquerque’s Good Samaritan and AFD Unit 78 Paramedic Captain Santos Garcia, Engine 3 Lieutenant Lawrence Woods, Firefighter Ryan Cheshire, Firefighter Michael Lucero, and Firefighter Matthew Trujillo, Rescue 13 Lieutenant Jason Chavez and Driver Matthew Chinchilla, and AAS EMT Allen Scott and Paramedic Thomas Rogers were recognized as this week’s City of Albuquerque’s Friday’s Heroes.
