Entrepreneurs Win Trips to Albuquerque, Tours of Innovation District Through National Marketing Campaign

Recipients represent startups from Austin, New York, Bay Area

ALBUQUERQUE – The City of Albuquerque is excited to announce the winners of a series of three contest drawings that will bring entrepreneurs from outside New Mexico to visit Albuquerque, tour Innovation Central, and meet business and government leaders.

Names entered in the contest were contacts made by the City during its sponsorship of three global startup events: Collision Conference in New Orleans in May, Next Gen Summit in New York City in June and HustleCon in Oakland, Calif., also in June. The sponsorships and the contest are strategies of Mayor Richard Berry’s National Marketing Campaign, a year-long, $1 million initiative to position Albuquerque as a vibrant center for entrepreneurship and to persuade innovative thinkers that Albuquerque is the ideal place to start or grow their business.

Winners are:

  • Nick Piontek, vice president of acquisitions for Austin startup CooMo Travel. Trip dates: July 19-21. CooMo Travel is a platform that allows users to create a personalized trip with the assistance of other users to curate their activities. Users also have the ability to meet like-minded travelers through their travel planning processes.
  •  Shyno Mathew, co-founder of qLogiX Entertainment, a Manhattan-based startup promoting interest in STEM among young children through fun, interactive and innovative play. Trip dates: Aug. 15-17.
  • Allen Wong, co-founder of San Francisco-based Campsyte, which matches people with common needs and interests to share space for work and play. Trip dates TBD.

“We couldn’t be happier about who we are bringing out to see our incredible city. Austin and the Bay Area are two of the National Marketing Campaign’s target markets, and millennials like Nick and Shyno are among our target demographics, so the results are a win for everyone,” said Autumn Gray, communications manager for the City’s Economic Development Department and program manager for the National Marketing Campaign.

Winners may bring with them an additional representative of their company. They will receive an all-expense paid two-night, three-day stay and a tour of those assets of the city’s entrepreneurial ecosystem that most interest them and align with their particular startup. Itineraries could include meetings with Mayor Berry and the City’s Economic Development Department Director, Gary Oppedahl, as well as visits to 1 Million Cups, ABQid, the Innovate ABQ site, Sandia Science & Tech Park, and more.

Names of contest entrants were assigned numbers, and the winning numbers were drawn by the City’s Economic Development Department via an online random number generator.
