Contractor Selected for the Penguin Exhibit Project

January 30, 2016

Albuquerque, NM- The City of Albuquerque issued a competitive Request for Proposals for the construction of the Penguin Exhibit Project in December 2016. After review and evaluation of two offerors, HB Construction is the apparent highest scoring responsive responsible offeror.

“The ABQ BioPark as a whole is a wonderful attraction that the City of Albuquerque has for families as well as for tourists,” said Mayor Richard J. Berry. “We are investing in our infrastructure by adding the Penguin Chill exhibit to our Zoo. It will be another wonderful reason to visit the BioPark.”

This roughly $12 million project will take approximately 11 1/2 months and is expected to begin in late February/early March.  A majority of the funding for the project is coming from the gross receipt tax that voters approved for the BioPark during the October 2015 election.  Other funding has come from the New Mexico BioPark Society.

“The Penguin Chill is an exciting exhibit,” said Dana Feldman, Director of the Cultural Services Department. “However, part of the construction is also the first stage of constructing a utility corridor at the BioPark that will make accessing water, sewer, gas and electrical lines easier as the BioPark continues the development of the master plan.”

“We are looking forward on managing this project that will be enjoyed by our whole community” said Melissa Lozoya, Acting Director for the Department of Municipal Development. “We have worked closely with Cultural Services and providing a top notch exhibit and are excited to complete this project on time and within budget.”
