City Supervisor Saves Senior’s Life

Employee of the Week: Department of Senior Affairs’ Thomas Gallagher

June 16, 2017

Albuquerque, NM – Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized Thomas Gallagher, a multigenerational center supervisor at the Department of Senior Affairs, as the City of Albuquerque’s Employee of the Week for saving the life of an elderly man who was found to be unresponsive.

This past March, while Gallagher was at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center, 86-year-old Norman Malm was there eating lunch. The City’s two multigenerational centers provided 31,562 meals for seniors in the last fiscal year. In the middle of eating his lunch, Albuquerque staff at the center noticed Malm was unresponsive. Staff immediately called 9-1-1 and alerted Gallagher to come into the dining room. Gallagher assessed the man and came to the belief that he was choking on a piece of food, causing him to stop breathing. He promptly performed the Heimlich maneuver but it did not affect the situation. When he determined that the man had not choked, Gallagher quickly began administering CPR. Shortly after Gallagher administered CPR, just before first responders arrived on the scene, Malm began to breathe again.

Gallagher’s swift, progressive actions in determining why Malm was not breathing and unresponsive proved to be life-saving for this older patron. It is for these reasons that Thomas Gallagher was recognized as this week’s City of Albuquerque’s Employee of the Week.
