City Partnership Allows for Faster Broadband in Facilities

Now, more people have free access to high speed internet throughout the City

January 24, 2017

Albuquerque, NM- Today, Mayor Richard Berry announced that the City of Albuquerque has completed contracts with CenturyLink to provide increased broadband speeds to 40 City locations, including three Senior Centers and nine Community Centers. The new broadband speeds will range as high as 1 Gigabit, over reliable fiber optic-based services. Other locations receiving increased broadband speeds include police and fire stations, as well as several recreational facilities. With the use of fiber optic technology, the broadband speeds can be easily increased by the City up to 10 Gigabits as the need arises.

“This partnership with CenturyLink allows us to further the fiber connections and increased telecom capabilities to some of our most critical City sites,” remarked Mayor Berry. “As broadband requirements continue to grow, I am proud that our citizens and employees will benefit by having increased broadband speeds where we most need it, at our community service and public safety facilities.”
CenturyLink has been working with the City’s Department of Technology and Innovation for the past several months to plan and develop solutions to upgrade broadband speeds to multiple City locations, using CenturyLink’s existing fiber optic network within the City.   As part of this public/private partnership, CenturyLink agreed to invest over $600,000 to build the additional infrastructure required to bring broadband to each of the 40 City locations.

“CenturyLink is proud to continue being a valued business partner with the City of Albuquerque to bring state-of-the-art broadband speeds to the citizens of Albuquerque,” said CenturyLink’s Vice President of Operations, Larry North.  “This is a great example of how we can leverage CenturyLink’s expansive existing fiber network to optimize the City’s budget when delivering new services and how public/private partnerships can come together to benefit the broader community.”

Facility construction to most of the 40 City locations has been completed and is currently operating under the upgraded broadband service from CenturyLink. Nearly all locations will be completed by July 2017.
