Employee of the Week: Laura Metzler
December 6, 2013
Albuquerque, NM – Today, Laura Metzler, Children's Librarian with the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Library was selected as the City of Albuquerque’s Employee of the Week. Ms. Metzler has worked for the ABC Library for 13 ½ years, and has inspired patrons and staff with her creative youth programs while working at the Erna Fergusson and Tony Hillerman branches.
Ms. Metzler is known by patrons for producing exceptional children’s literacy programming. For many years Ms. Metzler was an important member of the Summer Reading Program committee and was integral in the system-wide creation and implementation of the two-months-long summer program each year. She continues to provide extraordinary summer programs for children and teens. One program created by Ms. Metzler, Art Around the World, enables children ages 6-14 to explore a new style of art from a different part of the world. Other programs include Music and Movement storytimes and Origami Adventures.
"She has been a delight to work with and her professional, customer-focused approach makes her a real asset to the library," said Albuquerque Homeschooling Families in a letter to the ABC Library. "Her tireless energy, patience and support for our children have had a significant impact on their experience with learning and truly have helped them grow."
Ms. Metzler’s devotion to the community goes well beyond her programs. On Nov. 15, 2013, she assisted a library patron who had fallen and was unresponsive. While paramedics were on the way, Laura stayed with her and offered her hand. The woman was eventually able to take it and sit up, and they remained on the floor holding hands until paramedics arrived. It is for this event that Ms. Metzler was nominated for the City of Albuquerque’s Employee of the Week award.
