City Invites West Side Residents to New Dog Park
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Pet owners have an attractive place to exercise and socialize their dogs at a new West Side dog park.
This dog park is the largest of the City dog park system spanning two acres and is located at the corner of Ouray NW and Ladera. The park is adjacent to AMAFCA drainage facilities which have an 18-hole disc golf course with new parking areas for both the new dog park and the disc golf course.
"Dog parks are a very popular amenity throughout our city," Parks and Recreation Director Barbara Baca said. "These parks provide citizens a chance to spend recreational time with their pets as well as time to socialize with other dog lovers."
The City built the park with PVC coated chain link fencing which blends in better with the surroundings and decorative plasters for curb appeal. Engineered wood fiber was also used to stand up to the extensive wear and tear and less irritating to dogs' paws.
"District 1 residents now have a park that they can bring their dogs to that is closer to their homes," Councilor Ken Sanchez said. "Working with the community brings the amenities and needs of the Westside to fruition. We have many other accomplishments to achieve and through collaborative efforts, we will do so."
There is an American with Disabilities Act-compliant path from the parking lot to a bench within the dog park to accommodate people with mobility challenges. Future phases could include children's play area and plaza area.
