City Employee Saves Dog’s Life

Good Samaritan: Elizabeth Jones

August 25, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized Elizabeth Jones, an Accountant in the City of Albuquerque’s Environmental Health Department, as this week’s Good Samaritan for saving the life of a dog that was hit by a car.

On a July morning, Jones witnessed a German Shepard lying in the middle of Comanche Road, just west of Moon. She saw that the dog was bleeding and in distress, after being hit by a car. Jones, knowing she had to immediately act to save the dog, called her supervisor in the Environmental Health Department to report that she would be delayed arriving to work. While cars continued traveling past the dog Jones pulled over to help the injured dog. A man who was jogging by also saw the injured dog and stopped to help. She and the man loaded the German Shepard into Jones’ car to take to a local veterinary hospital in an effort to save its life.

Once Jones arrived at the veterinary hospital, hospital staff took the dog on a gurney to immediately render care. Soon after treating the dog for its injuries, the staff advised Jones that they were able to contact the German Shepard’s owner to explain that the dog had been hit by a car. Later in the day, Jones followed up with veterinary staff to check on the dog’s status. She learned that the dog survived, though, she was not given specifics on the dog’s health because of the veterinary hospital’s privacy policies.

In Environmental Health Director Mary Lou Leonard’s nomination of Jones, she indicated that she does her job as an accountant exceptionally well. She indicated that Jones is always punctual and was quite concerned about her late arrival the morning she stopped to save the dog’s life. She is a go-to employee, willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Because of Jones’ big heart and love for animals, the dog’s life was saved. It is for these reasons that Elizabeth Jones was recognized as this week’s City of Albuquerque’s Good Samaritan.
