Albuquerque Convention Center Receives National Recognition

ENR Southwest awards downtown project first for Renovation/Restoration

April 7, 2016

Albuquerque - Today, City officials and representatives from Dekker/Perich/Sabatini (DPS) are in New York City accepting an award from Engineering News-Record Southwest (ENR) naming the remodel of the Albuquerque Convention Center the best renovation/restoration project in the Southwest in 2015. The construction industry publication made its selection based on a panel of seven judges from across New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. Dekker/Perich/Sabatini will accept the award on behalf of their work on this project.

ENR recognized the success of the multi-phase $23.2 million project, while also commending the fact that the facility remained open throughout construction and limited the guest exposure to the work. The transformation project included a demolition and reconstruction of the main kitchen, a remodeled upper level ballroom with led lighting that can illuminate the space in more than 1 million color tones, a new west side entrance and outdoor serving deck, and all new interior finishes for both east and west buildings.   The project was constructed by two local contractors, Bradbury Stamm and Gerald Martin, to renovate what was a brutalistic architectural style into a modern territorial facility.

Engineering News-Record named the finished product a beautiful transformation embodying “Albuquerque’s unique spirit”. During the construction, the construction teams conducted the downtown project with efficiency while being considerate to day–to-day operations of the facility and the surrounding area.

There were five additional New Mexico companies included by ENR in the “2015 Best Projects” listing. HB Construction was a merit winner for best government/public building project for the Patrick J. Baca Library. Studio Southwest Architects was the winner for the best interior remodel and tenant improvement for their First National Rio Grande project. DWL Architects won best K-12 for their RFK Charter High School design. Jaynes Corp received an award for best specialty contracting for Sandia Resort & Casino’s parking garage. Mullen Heller Architecture P.C. was the winner in the best small project category for the Los Alamos County Nature Center.
