AFD Receives Coveted Award for Support of Military Members

The Albuquerque Fire Department’s nomination now heads to the nation’s capital for consideration

Albuquerque- The Albuquerque Fire Department received the “Above and Beyond Award” from the National Guard and Reserve Forces, during an award luncheon yesterday in Santa Fe.  

The Albuquerque Fire Department was also nominated to represent New Mexico for the prestigious Public Sector Employer - 2013 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award.  The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Award is the highest recognition given by the Secretary of Defense for an employer’s support provided to their employees who also serve in the National Guard and Reserves.

Nominations must come from a Guard or Reserve member who is employed by the organization they are nominating. The award was created to publicly recognize employers who provide exceptional support to their National Guard and Reserve employees. It is the highest in a series of employer recognition awards given by the Department of Defense.

All States and Territories screen their nomination and enter the most deserving nomination into the National competition in Washington DC. One nomination per category per state is allowed:
•    Public Sector
•    Large Employer
•    Small Employer

The Freedom Award is presented annually to the nation’s 15 most supportive employers, 5 winners in each category. The winners will be recognized during a special ceremony hosted by the Secretary of Defense in Washington, D.C in September of each year. AFD Lieutenant Erik Rasmussen from Rescue 16, nominated AFD for the coveted award.
