Temporary Stop on Southbound 118th St near Dennis Chavez to Serve Students
January 10, 2014
ALBUQUERQUE— On Jan. 13, 2014, ABQ RIDE service will begin its first weekday runs to Atrisco Heritage Academy High School in Southwest Albuquerque.
Route #198-98th St/Dennis Chavez will make its first run to the school at 6:50 a.m., in time to get students and staff to school by the 7:21 a.m. start of classes. The morning time was chosen based on survey results indicating most people wanted to arrive in the morning by 7 a.m. Two afternoon stops are scheduled; one arriving at 3 p.m. and another at 4:59 p.m. These afternoon times were chosen, based on survey results indicating particular interest in leaving school around 3 and 5 pm.
"The community, the City, Albuquerque Public Schools and the state all came together to gauge interest and then make this modification of Route #198 a reality," said Mayor Richard J. Berry. "It’s a testament to how cooperation can get things accomplished."
ABQ RIDE’s modification of Route #198 began last July, after a meeting between members of the community and Albuquerque’s Transit Department. ABQ RIDE developed both an English and Spanish survey to gauge interest and placed it on Survey Monkey. The South West Alliance of Neighborhoods also distributed printed copies of the survey, as did Atrisco Heritage Academy staff. What developed was a picture of the area’s ridership potential, followed by a plan for modifying the #198 to provide service.
The school will be served with a temporary stop on southbound 118th St, about 150 feet north of the intersection of 118th St and Dennis Chavez. Later, a new permanent stop will be placed on eastbound Dennis Chavez Blvd, about 250 feet east of the intersection with 118th St.
"Now, ABQ RIDE can provide transit service for students, faculty and staff, especially for after-hours extracurricular activities,” said Bruce Rizzieri, Director of ABQ RIDE. "This service can also be used by people going to the health clinic on the AHA campus."
ABQ RIDE is Albuquerque‘s principal form of public transportation. It boards 13-million passengers a year and logs a daily average of 160-Thousand Passenger Miles on its buses.
