ABQ BioPark Granted Accreditation by Association of Zoos & Aquariums

September 19, 2015

ALBUQUERQUE - Today the City of Albuquerque’s BioPark Zoo and Aquarium received a distinction given only to those who meet the highest standards as put forth by The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), which today announced that the ABQ BioPark was granted accreditation by AZA’s Independent Accreditation Commission.

"We are very pleased to receive this unconditional accreditation by the AZA." said Mayor Richard J. Berry.  "This is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the investments made by the citizens of Albuquerque and Biopark supporters, and our long term vision that will insure the Biopark remains a world class facility that educates and entertains while placing a premium on conservation efforts.”

AZA’s program requires members to be re-accredited every five years to remain members in good standing. After undergoing a rigorous review that met all criteria, including animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety, AZA determined that both presently and in the near future the ABQ BioPark has plans, practices and systems in place to ensure excellence. The ABQ BioPark Zoo and Aquarium has been afforded this distinction since 1981, a result of over three decades of emphasis on excellence in all areas.

“Only zoos and aquariums that meet the highest standards are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “By achieving AZA-accreditation, ABQ BioPark demonstrates that it is dedicated to protecting species and educating its visitors about the natural world.”

Founded in 1924, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, animal welfare, education, science, and recreation. AZA is the accrediting body for the top zoos and aquariums in the United States and seven other countries. When visiting the ABQ BioPark Zoo or Aquarium you can be assured that you are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things. The AZA is a leader in saving species and your link to helping animals all over the world. To learn more, visit
