9-11 Run & Memorial
Ten-year anniversary of 2001 terrorist attacks to include a run and remembrance ceremony honoring first responders and military personnel.
Mayor Richard J. Berry was recently joined by Col. Robert Maness, Commander of Kirtland Air Force Base 377th Air Base Wing, Bill Nelson, Executive Director of USA Cares and representatives from Blue Star Mothers to announce the upcoming Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5 K run in Downtown Albuquerque, which begins on Civic Plaza.
The run will take place at 8 a.m. Sept. 11.
Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers
Cities throughout the nation will host the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers run in a show of solidarity and to honor first responders and military personnel who risk their lives to protect public safety and freedom.
The run is named in honor of New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who lost his life in the twin towers on September 11, 2001.
He had just finished his shift that day when he heard the towers were hit. He immediately returned to Squad 1 to get his gear and attempted to drive his truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but found that it was already closed to traffic. Rather than turn back, he traveled by foot with 60 pounds of gear on his back and ran through the tunnel hoping to meet up with his squad. The run mimics the length of the path that Firefighter Siller had to take to get to the towers.
Memorial Run
The run is being coordinated by the Blue Star Mothers in coordination with the City of Albuquerque. Interested runners can register at www.Active.com. Walkers are also welcome to participate.
Registration for the 5K costs $25.
Annual Ceremony
Following the Tunnel to Towers 5K, the city of Albuquerque will once again hold their annual 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony on Civic Plaza at 10 a.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend to once again pay tribute to those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, or as a result of the tragic events of that day.
"With the ten year anniversary of 9-11 approaching, the city of Albuquerque plans to pay special tribute to the fallen. Through the Tunnel to Towers run and the annual ceremony, we will honor the extraordinary sacrifices of our first responders, military personnel and all who perished in the attacks on 9-11," said Mayor Berry.
