April 27, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Thomas Gallegos works as a Nutrition Driver for the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs. Mr. Gallegos is this week’s employee of the week.
Mr. Gallegos is being recognized for looking-out for the seniors he assists through the Meals for Homebound Seniors Program and his quick-thinking that potentially saved the life of one of Albuquerque’s senior citizens.
Earlier this year, Mr. Gallegos was delivering food to an elderly woman that he had been delivering to, for several years. When he arrived at the home he rang the doorbell and no one answered. It was extremely rare for this particular client not to answer the door.
Sensing that something may be wrong Mr. Gallegos continued ringing the doorbell and knocking. After stopping for a few seconds he heard a faint noise coming from inside the home. Mr. Gallegos check the doorknob, luckily it was unlocked. He entered the home and heard the elderly woman crying for help.
When Mr. Gallegos arrived to the lady’s side she informed him that she had fallen sometime in the last week and for days she had been unable to get up to call for help. Mr. Gallegos immediately called 911.
Shortly after the incident Hospice called Mr. Gallegos on behalf of the elderly woman to let him know that the lady wanted to thank him for "saving her life."
