Employee of the Week: Yolanda Lucero, Department of Senior Affairs
June 8, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE – Yolanda Lucero works as a Nutrition Driver for the Department of Senior Affairs for the City of Albuquerque and is this week’s employee week.
Mrs. Lucero is being recognized for her work in ensuring the safety of a developmentally disabled child.
Earlier this year, Mrs. Lucero was delivering food to senior citizens when she saw a boy walking along in the side of the road bike lane all alone. She wondered why the young boy wasn’t in school and what he was doing all by himself.
She pulled her car over next to the boy and asked him if he was ok and the boy just shrugged his shoulders in response. Her next question to the boy was whether or not he was lost and yet again the boy simply shrugged his shoulders. Mrs. Lucero realized shortly after that the boy was developmentally disabled and asked him to sit in her truck while she got help.
Mrs. Lucero immediately contacted 911 and told them of the situation. Shortly after officers from APS police drove by and she was able to flag the officers down and explain the situation. They explained that the boy was a student at Chelwood Elementary and that this was the second time he walked away from the campus. The officers took the boy back to the school safe and sound.
The perceptive actions of Mrs. Lucero helped in preventing what could have been a missing person’s situation.
