April 23, 2008
World Book Day, also known as Día del Libro, is a growing international celebration of literature, literacy, community and culture. Since its inception in 1995, more than 100 countries around the world, including Argentina, Canada, England, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Norway and Spain have promoted World Book Day activities honoring books and authors. This day is celebrated with public readings, literary competitions, exhibitions, poetry, radio programs and a range of other activities in libraries, schools, bookstores, universities and cultural and community centers.
In 2001, due to the efforts of two retired school teachers, April 23 was officially proclaimed World Book Day in Albuquerque. The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System has since celebrated the day with readings, multi-media exhibits and other programs at the Library branches.
