Programs for Children Families

 

 

Andy Mason – Sing, clap and dance along to the music of Andy Mason, a guitar playing singer of children’s songs!

Exotics of the Rainforest - Learn about tropical rainforests! This interactive presentation features live parrots and reptiles from the tropical rainforests and deserts of the world.

Helen Trencher, the Percussion Lady - Spark your imagination and ignite your creativity! Participants will experience a magical time filled with song, story, and rhythm. This interactive program is great for the entire family—ages 2 through 92!

Jim Cosgrove, Mr. Stinky Feet - Sing, dance and play instruments with this national award winning kid-rocker. Mr. Stinky Feet is always a crowd favorite!

John Polinko - Magician and Juggler John Polinko will amaze you with his magic using real animals. John is celebrating his 21st Anniversary performing for the Library’s Summer Reading Program.

Joy Ginther, Pink Elephant Theater – Audiences will be entertained with music, magic and puppets during this fun show presented by one of Albuquerque’s favorite children’s entertainers.

JUBALation - This local children’s ensemble features young bluegrass musicians playing traditional instruments.

Judy Pancoast – Acclaimed children’s musical entertainer Judy Pancoast will entertain the audience with upbeat songs that will make you want to get up and dance.

Laura Freeman, Iris Saves the Land of the Black & White (Play) – Enjoy a musical journey with Iris as she turns the Land of the Black & White into a colorful and fun place to live again. Audiences of all ages will enjoy this creative puppet show paired with live music.

Laurie Magovern – Storyteller Laurie Magovern will entertain with a variety of fun, creative and interactive stories for children.

Magical Michael Steele – Join Magical Michael Steele for an entertaining hour of magic and yo-yo tricks. Michael has been an elementary school teacher for 14 years and a professional entertainer since 1977.

Mike McCartney, Indiana Bones - Indiana Bones weaves a web of excitement and entertainment when telling stories based on ancient myths, regional folklore and past civilizations.

Ramona King – Ramona King is a beloved storyteller here in New Mexico. She will entertain audiences with her wide range of interactive tales.

Sean Etigson - Sean’s Stories & Songs from Many Lands is an interactive program that encourages children and adults alike to re-discover their love of learning and laughter.

Sunny Birklund and the Puppet Playhouse present a lively and fun variety puppet show for the whole family. “The Magic Beans” is based on Southwestern folklore and history, with marionettes, handpuppets, limberjacks, surprises and a Spanish hurdy gurdy like what might have visited New Mexico communities 100 years ago.

Programs for Teens

 

Comic Scripting 101, Shirl Sazynski – Learn the basics of comic or graphic novel writing by breaking down text into easily interpreted panels, writing a plot summary, creating character bios and drawing basic thumbnails.

Ginger Stull, Movie Makeup – Ginger Stull, a teacher at NMSU and movie makeup artist, will teach you the secrets of scars, wounds, aging and more. This is a hands-on workshop where students will be able to apply these techniques on themselves.

Kevin Kinane, Learn how to play guitar – Musician and music teacher Kevin Kinane can teach anyone how to play guitar in just a few hours. Stop by and check out how.

Mary Saunders, Origami – Learn how to fold paper into a variety of fun shapes. You could learn how to make frogs, lips, flowers and more.

Our Radioactive World, National Museum of Nuclear Science & History - Do we glow in the dark? Can you measure the half-life of licorice? What do superheroes have to do with radiation? By using a Geiger counter to test hot samples and by observing alpha, beta, and gamma rays in a cloud chamber, participants will learn about radiation and nuclear decay.

Rockets Into Space, National Museum of Nuclear Science & History – Learn about air rockets, rocket racers, GPS navigation and more. During this interactive program you will also learn about how a rocket is built and construct one of your own.

Programs for Adults

 

Aztec Stories, Michael Heralda - A Cultural, Educational, Musically Interactive Program From The Indigenous Perspective! Come Celebrate the Aztec Culture with Storyteller/Musician Michael Heralda.

Chili Madness with Jane Butel - Join Jane Butel, Albuquerque’s own expert on southwestern cuisine, for an evening of chile and chili. Learn about their many variations and preparations, and sample some of her favorite recipes. You will also have an opportunity to purchase her newest release, Chili Madness: A Passionate Cookbook.

Cooking Demonstration with Gilda Latzky - Join Gilda Latzky, a cooking and baking teacher at UNM and the Albuquerque Academy, as she demonstrates a variety of cooking techniques that provide simple and elegant summer fare. Today’s menu will consist of a cold soup, two salads and a dessert. Tasting samples and recipes will be provided.

Freedom Through Gesture Drawing, Shirl Sazynski – This rapid drawing session focuses on loosening up and capturing basic movement and character of subjects. Participants will sketch common objects from their surroundings learning to go with their gut sense, give their drawings “life”, and build confidence in quick impressions by avoiding the eraser.

Graphology & Edgar Allen Poe, Arlyn Imberman – Renowned graphologist Arlyn Imberman, author of Signature for Success, has sifted through handwritten evidence to analyze Edgar Allen Poe; she will weigh in on the famous author’s remarks about the handwritings of celebrated members from his own literary circle. She will discuss this and also give a short lesson in handwriting analysis. Copies of her book will be available for purchase.

Market Your Writing, Shirl Sazynski – Get answers from a freelance journalist and former submissions editor! How does the submissions process work? Who ultimately reads your writing? How do magazines decide what to print? How do you approach and editor? Learn how to pitch an article and how to spot the right markets for your work.


Simple Wire Sculpture, Shirl Sazynski – Participants will begin with a basic gesture-drawing warm-up. Then, using preliminary sketches as a base, they will learn to build a basic wire armature. Finally, students will wrap, coil, twist, cut, bend and weave wire into a sculpture. Some materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring wire cutters, pliers, 10-gague steel wire and found/natural objects.

Two Roses, Bonnie Schmader and Donese Mayfield – The music of Two Roses, a harp and flute duo, varies from Celtic to jazz to popular standards. Bonnie and Donese will play some of their favorite tunes while sharing information about the music and the instruments.
