What is Summer Reading?

   • A free 8 week program at your library that encourages children, teens and adults to read throughout the summer.

   • Everyone can register, read, and be eligible for fun incentives (prizes).

   • There are free programs and workshops in our libraries all summer long.

How do I join?

   • Visit your local Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library from May 29 to July 25.

   • Fill out a registration form at the Summer Reading Desk.

   • Children and teens will receive a reading log, bookmark and a schedule of summer activities.

 

How Do I Earn Prizes?      Prizes for Week 6

Children and Teens can visit their library every week to earn a different incentive.
Bring in your reading log to show us what you have accomplished!

   • Prizes for Children: Tote bags, Beach Balls, Cups, Beach Pails, Books.

   • Prizes for Teens: Backpacks, Pens, Books, Earbuds, Folders.

Adults can enter their phone number on the registration form when they sign up for Summer
Reading. Weekly drawings will be held at each branch.

   • Prizes for Adults: Library Tote Bags, Mugs, Note Cards, Car Sunshades.

 

Childrens Programming
Each Library offers free programs for children. Families, school groups and daycare groups are all welcome. Kids will enjoy music, magic, puppet shows, storytellers and more!

Every Child Ready to Read Storytimes
Seven Libraries will host special storytimes for children and caregivers. Storytimes incorporate methods of our Early Childhood Literacy Program, Every Child Ready to Read. Bilingual storytimes will be held.

 

Teen Programming
Each Library will offer free programs and workshops for teens ages 12-18:

   • Science Workshops
   • Movie Make-up Workshops
   • Learn Origami Paperfolding
   • Learn how to play the Guitar

 

Adult Programming
Libraries will offer free programs and workshops for adults:
   • Drawing and Wire Sculpture
   • Aztec music and stories
   • Cooking demonstrations
   • Graphology workshops

 

Can I make a donation to support Summer Reading @ the library?
Yes. Please visit Friends for the Public Library for information.

 

Why is SUMMER READING important?
Studies have shown that children who read during the summer generally maintain their reading skills, and that children who see their parents read, or who read with their parents generally have scored higher on standardized tests.
