Avoid Mosquitoes & Other Impossibilities

Actress and director Nancy Sellin shares details of her stint in the Peace Corps in the 1960s. She and her husband went to Monrovia, Liberia to save the world, armed with a three-inch-thick medical manual—the first two words read Avoid Mosquitoes and it included all the things they shouldn’t do. Forty years later, Nancy talks about homesickness and the daily challenges of living in a different culture—including encountering a deadly snake on the road and Christmas in the tropics. She recognizes that she may not have been able to save the world during her short stint with the Peace Corps, but she returned home with visceral experiences and altered perceptions that influenced the direction of her entire life.
