Kid Picks is a book club for kids in the East Mountains who like to share books. Kids who come to the club will be honored for being a reader. Those who want to will write at least one book review on a book they have read and share the review at the club meeting. Power Chords--a musical jam session for non-musicians (all ages welcome).
Bring your instrument, a note/chord chart for it, and whatever song you are or want to be working on…we’ll share, learn and practice together! Most instruments welcome (though loud ones need to be muffled). We’ll try to have examples of songs to listen to, and we’ll pass out simple sheet music & chord structure. We know basic guitar chords, but that’s about all. Note: These are NOT music lessons

Cooking Demonstration & Sampling.  Join Gilda Latzky, a cooking and baking teacher at UNM and the Albuquerque Academy, as she demonstrates a variety of cooking techniques that provide simple and elegant summer fare. Freedom Through Gesture Drawing. Presented by artist Shirl Sazynski, this rapid drawing session focuses on loosening up and capturing basic movement and character of subjects. Participants will sketch common objects from their surroundings learning to go with their gut sense, give their drawings “life”, and build confidence in quick impressions by avoiding the eraser. The Curio Cowboys are a souvenir of the roadside west, playing the music of great regional Western Swing bands of the '30s through the '50s.  

Sing along, tap your toes, or take a spin with your sweetie as the Curios play favorites from Milton Brown and the Musical Brownies, Cliff Bruner, Moon Mulican, Tex Williams and his Western Caravan, Johnnie Lee Wills and His Boys, the Masseys, Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys.   

Very few things in our world are the authentic item.  Treat yourself to the real thing and enjoy the Curio Cowboys -- preserving the popular dance music of the Southwest.  All ages are welcome! This event is brought to you by the Friends for the Public Library.

Simple Wire Sculpture. Participants will begin with a basic gesture-drawing warm-up. Then, using preliminary sketches as a base, they will learn to build a basic wire armature. Finally, students will wrap, coil, twist, cut, bend and weave wire into a sculpture. Some materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring wire cutters, pliers, 10-gague steel wire and found/natural objects. Please call the library in advance to register. Our Radioactive World - A program for teens ages 12-18.  Do we glow in the dark?  Can you measure the half-life of licorice?  What do superheroes have to do with radiation?  By using a Geiger counter to test hot samples and by observing alpha, beta, and gamma rays in a cloud chamber, participants will learn about radiation and nuclear decay.

Peter Alphonso Martin

Presently my work can be classified as “Figurative” with emphasis on “Conceptual Portraits.” No models necessary. The majority of my recent paintings are “Hardline-Sharp Focus,” a mix of acrylic paint and acrylic ink. For my drawings, I use ink, pencil, crayon, oil pastel, ballpoint, and watercolor – sometimes in combination for effect.

Our Radioactive World - A program for teens ages 12-18. Do we glow in the dark? Can you measure the half-life of licorice? What do superheroes have to do with radiation? By using a Geiger counter to test hot samples and by observing alpha, beta, and gamma rays in a cloud chamber, participants will learn about radiation and nuclear decay. Graphology & Edgar Allen Poe Renowned. Graphologist Arlyn Imberman, author of Signature for Success, has sifted through handwritten evidence to analyze Edgar Allen Poe; she will weigh in on the famous author’s remarks about the handwritings of celebrated members from his own literary circle. She will discuss this and also give a short lesson in handwriting analysis. Copies of her book will be available for purchase.

Tony Hillerman Honored book jacket for Seldom Disappointed by Tony Hillerman

Mayor Martin Chávez announced that the Wyoming Library has been renamed the Tony Hillerman Library in recognition of the work and life of Tony Hillerman; universally respected author, journalist, storyteller, and father. The Wyoming Library was used by the Hillerman family when they lived nearby on Texas Street.
